Berne, 18.12.2006 - The members of the Economic and Social Council of the United Nations have appointed the Swiss international lawyer, Professor Barbara Wilson, to succeed Professor Giorgio Malinverni on the Committee on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights in an election held in New York. Switzerland welcomes this appointment.

Economic, social and cultural rights are enshrined in the International Covenant of the same name of 1966. The Covenant came into force in Switzerland on 18 September 1992. It covers, among others, the rights to work under just and favourable conditions, to social security, to training, to an adquate standard of living (food, clothing and housing), as well as the right to the enjoyment of the highest attainable standard of physical and mental health. The Commitee for Economic, Social and Cultural Rights was established in 1985 to monitor the implementation of the Covenant and comprises 18 independent experts. It analyses the reports of the States parties and addresses comments on the reports to the countries concerned.
