On 7 December 2016 Doris Leuthard was elected President of the Swiss Confederation for 2017. This is her second term as president, the first being in 2010.
The president fulfils special tasks during his/her year of office, including cooperation within the government and representation of Switzerland to the outside world.
Since the establishment of the Federal State in 1848, the function of the president has undergone a number of significant changes. Many traditions are actually far more recently established than you might think.
