Human rights dialogue between Iran and Switzerland

Bern, 09.09.2008 - The fourth round of the human rights dialogue between Switzerland and Iran took place yesterday in Bern. The two delegations agreed on closer collaboration in the field of juvenile justice.

Iran and Switzerland have been conducting a human rights dialogue since 2003. Yesterday’s meeting, the fourth round, took place at the level of deputy foreign minister. The FDFA delegation was led by the Deputy State Secretary, Anton Thalmann, the Iranian delegation by the Deputy Foreign Minister, Sayed Mohammad-Ali Hosseini. The talks primarily focused on setting priorities for future rounds of the dialogue and possible joint projects, which initially are expected to be carried out in the field of juvenile justice and later extend to alternative forms of punishment.

In the talks yesterday, the FDFA criticised the use of the death penalty in Iran, in particular the execution of minors, corporal punishment and violations of the freedom of expression of opinion, as well as the repression of Kurds and members of the Baha’i faith.
