Switzerland condemns the nuclear test carried out by the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (North Korea)

Berne, 09.10.2006 - North Korea has announced that it carried out an underground nuclear test on 9 October 2006. Switzerland condemns the test as counter to international efforts to prevent the proliferation of nuclear weapons in the world and as a threat to the security of the region.

The test took place a little less than a week after the North Korean Foreign Ministery announced (on 3 October 2006) that such a test would be carried out. Switzerland condemns the test, saying that it threatens the security of the region and could lead to a regional arms race. Switzerland is actively committed to the non-proliferation and complete elimination of nuclear weapons. Switzerland has appealed to North Korea on several occasions to rejoin the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty after it withdrew in 2003. Switzerland firmly believes that the nuclear weapons issue on the Korean Peninsula should be resolved by peaceful means within the framework of the six-party talks.

Switzerland will co-operate with any decision by the UN Security Council to impose binding sanctions against North Korea.
