Publication information: comparative study on ageing and health in five countries

Bern, 22.12.2016 - The world’s population is living longer, which means the number of old people is growing in every country. To address this situation, the World Health Assembly approved the Global Action Plan on Ageing and Health in May 2016 in Geneva. An international comparative study commissioned by the Federal Office of Public Health sets out the strategies and political measures that are being applied in five countries in order to meet the challenges.

Older people should be able to enjoy good health and live in a suitable environment in the last period of their lives. In order to achieve this goal set by the World Health Organisation, cross-sectoral measures are required at various levels. Countries like Switzerland, France, the Netherlands, Norway and Japan have already adopted appropriate strategies.
A study now compares the various measures in these five countries, identifying the challenges and the various people they concern. The study concludes that plans must be coordinated at local, regional and national levels in order to achieve success.
