President Schneider-Ammann to pay visit to Slovakia on Monday

Bern, 16.06.2016 - A few days before Slovakia assumes the presidency of the Council of the European Union, President Johann N. Schneider-Ammann has been invited to pay a state visit to Slovakia on Monday, 20 June, where he will be received by the country’s president, Andrej Kiska. Following the initial reception and talks the two presidents will attend the Business and Innovation Forum Slovakia-Switzerland 2016. In the afternoon President Schneider-Ammann will meet Prime Minister Robert Fico, economic affairs minister, Peter Žiga, and education minister, Peter Plavčan. The president will be accompanied on his visit by an economic delegation.

Talks will focus on the state of and outlook for relations between Switzerland and the European Union (EU) and Slovakia’s aims during its presidency of the EU Council in the second half of the year. The official meetings in Bratislava will also be attended by State Secretary Jacques de Watteville, Switzerland’s chief negotiator for relations with the European Union.

In terms of bilateral relations, topics will include economic cooperation, cooperation as part of Switzerland’s EU enlargement contribution and an exchange on vocational education and training, research and innovation. Other issues likely to be discussed include the migration and security situations in Europe.   

The core themes of this year’s Business and Innovation Forum Slovakia-Switzerland, which is held every two years, are the digitisation of production processes and robotics.
