Connecting the dots, creating impact – swissnex Annual Report 2015

Bern, 26.04.2016 - "Connecting the dots, creating impact" is the theme of this year’s interactive Annual Report of the swissnex network published on the website www.annualreport.swissnex.org. In 2015, the swissnex, together with the Science and Technology Counselors, continued to support the internationalization of its partner institutions in the fields of education, research and innovation (ERI) and to strengthen Switzerland’s image abroad as a leading knowledge hotspot. Together with over 100 Swiss partner institutions, the swissnex teams organized more than 350 events, amongst other activities.

A solar-powered small airplane, built by Swiss students, will soon be flying over the Brazilian Amazon as part of a research project. Virtually flying with an interactive flight simulator demonstrated Switzerland’s virtual reality strengths in Boston. Swiss companies receive insights into the latest Trends in the FinTech-industry in the Bay Area of San Francisco and in the Media capital of New York City. A Swiss University of Teacher Education fostered new partnerships in India. A Swiss-Singaporean Student Orchestra was formed, and a Swiss alumni network has been established in China.

This is just a glimpse of the swissnex activities presented in the digital Annual Report of the network. In 2015, the swissnex teams, together with over 100 Swiss partner institutions, organized more than 350 events, supported over 150 start-ups and have reached a total of over 20’000 Facebook friends over that time period. Total funding of the network in 2015 amounted to CHF 8.87 Mio., of which CHF 2.93 Mio was covered by partner contributions. The swissnex generated a total project volume of CHF 3.66 Mio., of which roughly three-quarters were funded by their project partners.

The swissnex network, which is run by the State Secretariat for Education, Research and Innovation (SERI) in close partnership with the Federal Department of Foreign Affairs (FDFA), currently comprises five offices in Boston, San Francisco, Shanghai, Bangalore and Rio de Janeiro, as well as three satellites in New York, São Paolo and Guangzhou. Together with the 20 Science and Technology Counsellors, they form the Confederation’s foreign network for education, research and innovation. Their mission is to support the internationalization of Swiss ERI players through networking and advisory services, raise the profile of the Swiss ERI sector abroad and to promote knowledge transfer with leading knowledge centers throughout the world.
