World Radiocommunication Conference: the challenges of mobile communications

Biel/Bienne, 27.10.2015 - How to cope with the growth in broadband mobile communications and identify new frequencies? This question appears on the agenda of the next World Radiocommunication Conference (CMR-15) which will be held in Geneva from 2 to 27 November. The Federal Office of Communications OFCOM will represent Switzerland's interests. The Swiss delegation will be led by Philippe Horisberger, OFCOM Deputy Director.

For Switzerland, what is mainly at stake at CMR-15 is the identification of new frequency bands essential to the development of mobile broadband communication systems. In this area, the growth in demand is in fact exponential. Moreover, it is important for the emergency services to have sufficient frequencies at their disposal in the event of a catastrophe or serious events. It is also necessary to take into account the requirements of scientific research and the security imperatives in relation to aircraft navigation.

The World Radiocommunication Conferences take place every three to four years. They enable revision of the "Radio Regulations", the international treaty which governs use of the radio frequency spectrum and satellite orbits. It is therefore a matter of adapting the existing framework to the spectrum requirements for the development of existing applications or the introduction of new applications. This treaty has a mandatory character for the administrations which are members of the International Telecommunication Union ITU, including Switzerland.
