President Sommaruga travels to Madrid, Warsaw and Luxembourg

Bern, 03.07.2015 - European policy: As part of the intensive discussions on the future of Switzerland’s relations with the European Union, President Simonetta Sommaruga will be travelling to two further European capitals this week. On Monday, 5 July, she will meet with the Spanish prime minister, Mariano Rajoy, in Madrid, and on Wednesday, 8 July, she has a meeting in Warsaw with the Polish prime minister, Eva Kopacz. On Thursday, 9 July, Ms Sommaruga is attending a meeting of the EU’s Justice and Home Affairs Council (JHA) in Luxembourg.
On Monday President Sommaruga will meet the Spanish king, Felipe VI, prime minister, Mariano Rajoy and the deputy prime minister and government spokesperson, Soraya Sáenz de Santamaría. The talks will focus on European policy issues and Europe's migration policy, as well as cooperation under the Schengen/Dublin agreements. The long tradition of Swiss-Spanish relations and the current economic situation in both countries will also be among the subjects under discussion.
On the second day of her visit, Ms Sommaruga will meet the Spanish interior minister, Jorge Fernández Díaz,where the two will discuss the challenges posed by the increasing numbers of migrants in the Mediterranean.
Meeting with Polish heads of state and government in Warsaw
On Wednesday Ms Sommaruga will travel to Poland where she will meet President Bronisław Komorowski and Prime Minister Ewa Kopacz in two separate meetings. Their discussions will focus on bilateral relations between Switzerland and Poland, both countries' European policy and European security issues.
Finally, on Thursday, Ms Sommaruga will attend an informal meeting of the EU's Justice and Home Affairs Council (JHA) in her role as head of the Federal Department of Justice and Police (FDJP). This is the first meeting of the JHA since Luxembourg took on its sixth-month presidency of the European Council.
