Repatriation of condemned Swiss citizen from Thailand

Berne, 13.04.2007 - A Swiss citizen condemned for lèse-majesté in Thailand has been released from prison and subsequently transferred to Switzerland. The Federal Department of Foreign Affairs welcomes this decision.

On March 29, the Swiss citizen Oliver Jufer has been condemned to 10 years of prison by a Thai court for a crime of lèse-majesté. On April 12, Mr. Jufer  was released and subsequently brought to Switzerland where he arrived today. The decision by the Thai authorities was made possible by a Royal pardon.  

Switzerland welcomes the release from prison and subsequent transfer of Oliver Jufer. Micheline Calmy-Rey, President of the Swiss Confederation, expresses her gratitude to his majesty the King Bhumibol Adulyadej. The Federal Department of Foreign Affairs provided consular protection to Mr. Jufer.
