Europe Day – recalling our continent’s strengths

Bern, 05.05.2016 - Geographically small, densely populated, prosperous, committed to democracy, multicultural and multilingual – all this describes our country and, to a large extent, our continent. In many ways, Europe is to the world what Switzerland is to Europe. When it comes to foreign policy, our traditions and experiences may be different, but our goals for the world of today are the same.

We share values in Europe and are committed to human rights, fundamental freedoms and the rule of law. This solid foundation is a prerequisite for lasting economic prospects and employment opportunities.

On 5 May – Europe Day – we pay special attention to what unites all of us on this continent. This day commemorates the founding of the Council of Europe in London in 1949. Almost all European nations are members of this institution. Switzerland joined in 1963.

Joining the Council of Europe made it possible for many countries – including Switzerland – to modernise their laws protecting rights and freedoms. Provisions such as those of the European Convention on Human Rights (ECHR) have become an integral part of the Swiss legal system.

In domestic debate, the importance of the Council of Europe is somewhat overlooked at times – perhaps precisely because the Council of Europe is appreciated across the entire political spectrum. It is important to note that Switzerland is an active member in Strasbourg. Over the years, Switzerland has become a driving force in the Council of Europe where it is highly respected as a credible and capable partner. A particularly noteworthy example is our commitment to securing the future of the European Court of Human Rights and to reforming the Council of Europe.

Through its commitment, Switzerland affirms its faith in European core values and in multilateral cooperation with other European nations.

Beethoven’s ‘Ode to Joy’ is the anthem of the European Union. Especially in times when Europe is facing great challenges, it is worth remembering how fortunate we are to be European – and so one of the things that unites us on this Europe Day is a shared feeling of gratitude.

Johann N. Schneider-Ammann

President of the Swiss Confederation
