The Federal Department of Foreign Affairs calls on all parties to the conflict in Syria to respect international humanitarian law with immediate effect

Bern, 16.02.2016 - The Federal Department of Foreign Affairs FDFA welcomes the agreement of the International Syria Support Group reached on 12 February 2016 to seek a cessation of hostilities in Syria and to facilitate the delivery of humanitarian aid in Syria. The FDFA asks the parties to implement the agreement immediately.

The FDFA reiterates its appeal to all parties to meet their obligations with respect to international humanitarian law, in particular to ensure the protection of civilians trapped in the fighting, and to authorise the regular delivery of aid to all civilians in need in the combat zones.

The FDFA is appalled by the multiplication of attacks on the emergency medical activities in the conflict zones. These attacks are becoming increasingly systematic and constitute a serious obstacle to the delivery of medical aid urgently needed by the victims of armed conflict. The FDFA calls for strict respect for international humanitarian law and in particular asks all parties involved in armed conflict to take immediate measures to ensure the protection of civilians and the emergency medical activities.
