Federal Councillor Ignazio Cassis to visit Mozambique on the occasion of the signing of the peace accord

Bern, 05.08.2019 - Federal Councillor Ignazio Cassis will travel to Mozambique on Tuesday 6 August 2019 to attend the signing ceremony of the peace accord, to which Switzerland made a decisive contribution. Various political talks and visits to Swiss aid projects are also on the agenda. Mr Cassis will be accompanied by Councillor of States Damian Müller and National Councillor Thomas Aeschi.

The peace accord between the parties to the conflict – the ruling Mozambique Liberation Front (FRELIMO) and the opposition Mozambican National Resistance (RENAMO) – has been signed on August 1, 2019. Through its good offices, Switzerland made a significant contribution to the conclusion of the accord. In addition, just under a month ago UN Secretary-General António Guterres appointed Switzerland's ambassador in Maputo, Mirko Manzoni, to be his personal envoy for Mozambique.

On the sidelines of the ceremony, courtesy visits are planned to President Filipe Jacinto Nyusi and Foreign Minister José Condungua António Pacheco.

On Wednesday 7 August, Mr Cassis will visit Swiss Humanitarian Aid projects in Beira, central Mozambique, and meet senior local government representatives. Mozambique was hit by two cyclones in the spring of 2019. Beira bore the full brunt of Cyclone Idai, which left a trail of devastation as it moved inland. Just days after the cyclone made landfall, Switzerland brought in supplies and experts to support the local population.
