President Ueli Maurer travels to Poland to mark anniversary of diplomatic relations
Bern, 14.05.2019 - Switzerland and the Republic of Poland, which was restored after the First World War, established diplomatic relations 100 years ago. To mark the occasion, President Ueli Maurer travelled to Warsaw on Tuesday, 14 May, where he was received by Polish President Andrzej Duda.
Among the subjects addressed during the official talks were bilateral relations, particularly cooperation on education, research and innovation, as well as financial and economic matters. Switzerland and Poland work together closely within the Bretton Woods institutions as both are members of the same constituency in the International Monetary Fund and the World Bank.
The talks also covered cooperation regarding Switzerland’s EU enlargement contribution and the decision-making process concerning a second Swiss contribution to selected EU member states. President Maurer explained the current state of Switzerland’s relations with the European Union and informed his discussion partners about the results of the consultations on the institutional agreement and the next steps. The delegations also discussed matters relating to European security policy.The two sides cited the Polish Museum at Rapperswil Castle as an important historical symbol of the friendship between Switzerland and Poland.
As well as meeting President Duda, Mr Maurer also held talks with the speaker of the Sejm. Later in the day, he laid a wreath at the Grave of the Unknown Soldier. The anniversary celebrations were held at the Old Orangery in Łazienki Park. To illustrate the leap to the next hundred years of bilateral relations, the ski jumpers Kamil Stoch and Andreas Küttel were among the guests invited to the event by President Maurer and President Duda.
