Imprisonment and juvenile placement 2015 – Further decline in numbers of young people in secured accomodation; status quo in adult imprisonment

Neuchâtel, 25.01.2016 - (FSO) - On 2 September 2015, across Switzerland 433 juveniles were placed outside of their families after having committed an offence. The number of juveniles placed outside the home has halved since 2010. On the same day, 6884 adults were detained in detention centres in Switzerland. The occupancy rate of institutions under the penal agreement of Eastern Switzerland was 85%, that of Northwest and Central Switzerland 88%. In prisons under the penal agreement of Latin Switzerland, the occupancy rate was 108%. These are some of the findings from the reference day survey produced by the Federal Statistical Office (FSO).
