Swiss Film Award 2013: “Nominees Week”: showcasing the best of contemporary Swiss cinema

Bern, 01.03.2013 - From 19 to 25 March Cinémas du Grütli in Geneva and Filmpodium in Zurich will offer the general public a chance to see all the films nominated for this year’s Swiss Film Award. This event, which showcases the diversity, versatility and vibrancy of film-making in Switzerland today, is an initiative by the Association “Quartz” Genève Zürich. As well as special screenings in the run-up to the ceremony, the Association has planned a series of debates and discussions which should throw into sharp relief the issues faced by the Swiss film industry in 2013, and the aspirations that drive it forward. The award ceremony itself, which is organised by the Federal Office of Culture, will take place in Geneva on 23 March.

"Nominees Week" is a series of events which are held in the run-up to the Swiss Film Award ceremony on the evening of 23 March. The project is the brainchild of the Association "Quartz" Genève Zürich, which was founded by the city and canton of Geneva in partnership with the city of Zurich. The aim of the various events held throughout the week is to celebrate the very best of Swiss cinema today while encourage greater interaction and cooperation between the country’s two main film development hubs. The venue for the award ceremony is the Bâtiment des Forces Motrices in downtown Geneva, the first time that the city will host this gala event.

Special screening of nominated films
From 19 to 25 March Cinémas du Grütli in Geneva and Filmpodium in Zurich will screen all the films nominated for a 2013 Swiss Film Award. Many of the films’ directors, producers and distributors, as well as professionals from the arts and cultural sector will be in attendance, both during and after the screening.

Podium discussions on future of Swiss film industry
In addition, Filmpodium in Zurich (21 March) and Cinémas du Grütli in Geneva (22 March) will each host a debate entitled "What are our dreams? New visions for Swiss cinema". At the heart of this discussion will be the challenging issue of how to plan and reshape the future of the film industry in Switzerland.

Platform for Swiss film schools
In the interests of nurturing the next generation of film-makers, the Association "Quartz" Genève Zürich has given two Swiss film schools – Haute école d’art et de design (HEAD) in Geneva and the Zürcher Hochschule der Künste (ZHdK) – the opportunity to screen the best of their student films. These will be shown in partner cinemas on Tuesday 19 March (Zurich) and on Wednesday 20 March (Geneva). It will also be a valuable opportunity for HEAD and ZHdk students to meet and share their experiences and ideas. Young cinema-goers will also be treated to special screenings of the nominated short films at selected primary and secondary schools.

Cine-brunch and screening of winning films
Last but not least, Geneva and Zurich will each host a celebratory cine-brunch on Sunday 24 March. The public will have the chance to (re-)watch the award-winning films and spend a pleasant afternoon in the company of some of the winners.
