Swissmedic - International conference on the Council of Europe Medicrime Convention in Basel

Bern, 09.04.2010 - A two-day international conference on the future Medicrime Convention on the counterfeiting of medical products will take place in Basel on 15 and 16 April under the aegis of the Swiss Chairmanship of the Council of Europe Committee of Ministers. The event will be organised by Swissmedic, the Swiss Agency for Therapeutic Products in co-operation with the European Directorate for the Quality of Medicines and HealthCare (EDQM).

In the light of the current, global threat from pharmaceutical crime, the fight against counterfeit medical products and similar crimes should be enhanced by this international convention both in Europe and worldwide. The Member States of the Council of Europe intend this convention, which will be adopted in May of this year and released for ratification in autumn, to provide an improved legal framework and to promote co-operation.

The overarching aims of the Convention are preventing and fighting pharmaceutical crime by means of more deterrent sanctions, the protection of victims, and more intensive national and international co-operation.

The purpose of the Conference is to discuss and prepare concrete measures for the rapid and wide implementation of the Convention.

Further details regarding the Medicrime Convention and the outcomes of the Conference will be presented at a press conference within the framework of the event.

Press conference: 16 April 2010, 12.45 p.m.

Location: "Messe Basel" complex, Building 1, Chur hall.
