Fire at Malagnou synagogue in Geneva
Berne, 02.06.2007 - Statement by President of the Confederation Micheline Calmy-Rey
The President of the Confederation was saddened and alarmed to learn of the fire which destroyed Malagnou synagogue in Geneva on 24 May 2007.
According to the investigating judge the fire was due to arson. The President of the Confederation condemns in the strongest term this deliberate attack on the integrity of a place of worship.
She re-affirms her solidarity with the Jewish community of Geneva and of Switzerland and promises her full support. All anti-Semitic acts are intolerable. This act is an affront to the culture of dialogue and of consultation which characterises Switzerland both at home and abroad.
