7% increase in number of detainees in 2024

Neuchâtel, 29.04.2024 - There were 6881 detained persons in Switzerland on 31 January 2024 (+7% compared with the same reference day in 2023). This total is similar to that recorded on 31 January 2020, before the COVID-19 pandemic. Of these 6881 people, 64% were detained under a custodial sentence or measure (including the accelerated execution of a sentence), 30% were in remand or preventive detention and 6% were imprisoned for other reasons. These figures come from the latest imprisonment survey carried out by the Federal Statistical Office (FSO).
