The two vice chancellors support the federal chancellor in running the Federal Chancellery.

Vice Chancellor Jörg De Bernardi

The Federal Council appointed Jörg De Bernardi as vice chancellor in June 2016. He is a member of the Federal Chancellery’s management team. He oversees the Federal Council Affairs Section, the Legal Section, the Official Publications Centre and the Central Language Services (the German and French Sections, the Italian Division and the Terminology Section). Sharing his responsibilities with Federal Chancellor Walter Thurnherr and his fellow vice chancellor and Federal Council spokesperson, André Simonazzi, Jörg De Bernardi prepares for, attends and follows up the meetings of the Federal Council. He ensures that all seven departments are informed about the Federal Council’s decisions.

The Federal Council appointed André Simonazzi as vice chancellor and Federal Council spokesperson in November 2008. He is responsible for government communication and coordinates the department’s information services. After the weekly Federal Council meeting he appears in front of the media at the weekly press conference, which is also attended by the federal councillors involved in the day’s important decisions. He is a member of the Federal Chancellery’s management team and heads the three following sections: Information and Communications, Communication Support and Strategic Management Support Section. Since the beginning of 2015 he has also headed the Presidential Affairs Unit, which advises and supports the President of the Confederation.
