Federal Council nominates Daniel Heller as IMF Executive Director in Washington

Bern, 27.03.2013 - Today, the Federal Council nominated Daniel Heller as the Swiss Executive Director to the International Monetary Fund (IMF) in Washington. On 1 July 2013, Mr. Heller will succeed RenĂ© Weber, the Head of the Markets Division in the State Secretariat for International Financial Matters (SIF). Election by the Governors of the constituency led by Switzerland is required for Mr. Heller's definitive appointment.

Daniel Heller holds a doctorate in economics and has been working since 2012 as the Director and Head of the International Monetary Cooperation Department at the Swiss National Bank (SNB) in Zurich. The 49-year-old joined the SNB in 1994 and has held various positions. After working in the Economic Studies Division, from 1997 he was firstly the Deputy Director and Head of Payment Systems and, from 2002, the Director and Head of Financial Systems. In 2009 he subsequently became the Secretary General of the Committee on Payment and Settlement Systems at the Bank for International Settlements (BIS) in Basel, up until 2012, when he returned to the SNB.

Switzerland has been a member of the IMF since 1992. It represents a constituency, of which Switzerland is a member along with Poland, Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, and Serbia. Switzerland's constituency holds one of the 24 seats in the Executive Board of the IMF.
