New Swiss ambassadors

Bern, 04.03.2022 - Personnel changes will take place in 2022 at several Swiss representations and at the head office of the Federal Department of Foreign Affairs (FDFA) as part of the periodic transfer rotation and on the basis of appointments made by the Federal Council. The appointments of heads of mission abroad become effective following approval by the respective host states.

Appointments

Tiziano Balmelli, currently deputy head of mission in Ankara, has been appointed ambassador extraordinary and plenipotentiary to the State of Kuwait, with residence in Kuwait.

Urs Hammer, until recently consul general in Frankfurt am Main, has been appointed ambassador extraordinary and plenipotentiary to the Republic of Croatia, with residence in Zagreb.

Denis Knobel, currently head of mission in Ljubljana, has been appointed ambassador extraordinary and plenipotentiary to the Holy See, with residence in Rome.

Peter Nelson, currently head of the audit group for representations and deputy head of Internal Audit at the FDFA General Secretariat in Bern, has been appointed ambassador extraordinary and plenipotentiary to the Slovak Republic, with residence in Bratislava.

Nadine Olivieri Lozano, currently head of the International Security Division at the FDFA State Secretariat in Bern, has been appointed ambassador extraordinary and plenipotentiary to the Islamic Republic of Iran, with residence in Tehran.

Stéphane Rey, currently a member of the UN secretary-general's Peacebuilding Fund's advisory proup, has been appointed ambassador extraordinary and plenipotentiary to the Republic of Zimbabwe, the Republic of Zambia and the Republic of Malawi, with residence in Harare.

Gabriele Schreier, currently head of the Political and Security Department of the Swiss mission to the European Union in Brussels, has been appointed ambassador extraordinary and plenipotentiary to the Republic of Slovenia, with residence in Ljubljana.

Conferment of ambassadorial titles

Balz Abplanalp, currently consul general in San Francisco, was awarded the title of ambassador for his function
