The population with no religious affiliation is now the largest group in Switzerland

Neuchâtel, 26.01.2024 - With a share of 34%, the population in Switzerland with no religious affiliation overtook Catholics (32%) for the first time in 2022. While the latter religious community, just like that of the Reformed Protestants, has declined steadily in recent years, the group with no religious affiliation has increased by more than 13 percentage points since 2010. In the cantons of Basel-Stadt and Neuchâtel, it even forms the majority of the population. People with no religious affiliation tend to be young on average, accounting for 42% of 25 to 34-year-olds in 2022. This is shown by the latest findings on religions from the structural survey of the Federal Statistical Office (FSO).
