Federal Council releases frequencies for mobile private networks

Bern, 29.11.2023 - From 1 January 2024, a frequency range will be available to interested parties for in-house communication using independent mobile networks. This option is provided for in the National Frequency Allocation Plan (NFAP), along with other adjustments. This was decided by the Federal Council at its meeting on 29 November 2023.

As of 1 January 2024, the 3400–3500MHz frequency range will be available for mobile private networks (MPNs). This decision by the Federal Council takes account of developments across Europe and responds to the demands and needs of the economy. MPNs – also known as campus networks – enable companies, public authorities and universities to operate their own mobile broadband network over a restricted local area. The networks operate with low transmission power and are used exclusively for internal mobile communication between machines and/or people.

MPNs play a valuable role in the automation and optimisation of internal company processes, for example in the production of industrial goods. Networks of this kind can also be operated in other areas such as in the logistics sector, retail trade or in hospitals. The benefits offered by MPNs include improved security, reliability, control and very short response times that can be tailored to users' specific requirements. By releasing the frequencies, the Federal Council is creating better conditions for Swiss industry and boosting the spread of digitalisation.

The National Frequency Allocation Plan (NFAP) defines the allocation of frequencies to certain radio services, e.g. broadcasting, mobile communications, microwave transmission and satellite communications. The Federal Office of Communications OFCOM issues the NFAP and submits updates to the Federal Council for approval. In addition to the frequencies for private local networks, changes this year include updates based on current efforts to harmonise the international mobile telecom regulatory framework.
