International aviation relies on sustainable fuels

Bern, 24.11.2023 - Alternative fuels are to reduce CO2 emissions from international aviation by 5 percent by 2030: This was agreed by over 100 participating states at the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) Alternative Aviation Fuels Conference in Dubai on 24 November 2023. In the negotiations, Switzerland worked towards an outcome that is compatible with the Confederation's climate policy. This is a decisive step towards achieving the global international aviation goal of net zero CO2 emissions by 2050.

Net zero CO2 emissions by 2050 - this long-term goal was set by the General Assembly of the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) back in October 2022. The ICAO Conference on Aviation and Alternative Fuels (CAAF) has now specified this goal for alternative fuels. After sometimes challenging negotiations, which took place in Dubai from November 20 to 24, 2023, the member states agreed that the share of these fuels should reduce the net CO2 emissions of global international aviation by 5% by 2030. The outcome of the negotiations identifies sustainable aviation fuels as the most important contribution to achieving the net-zero CO2 target for international aviation by 2050. With this negotiation outcome, ICAO and the international community are sending out a clear signal that they want to promote the global production of sustainable aviation fuels. The Swiss National Council is currently discussing the revision of the Swiss CO2 Act, including measures to reduce the climate impact of aviation. The outcome of the negotiations in Dubai is in line with the national policy in the area of aviation fuels.
