Swiss government to enhance its international communications

Bern, 17.10.2023 - The Federal Council has determined that the decisions and positions it takes on matters with an international dimension should be better communicated abroad. To this end, it is expanding its international communications by creating a dedicated English-language account on X (formerly Twitter).

Since 2011 the official spokesperson for the Federal Council has managed the Twitter/X account @BR_Sprecher, which primarily serves a domestic audience in the country’s national languages. In 2021, the Federal Council decided in its Social Media Strategy to add a second channel to publish information primarily in English. This new account is being launched today under the handle @SwissGov.

In dealings and decisions with an international dimension, the Federal Council would like Switzerland’s interests to be better represented abroad. The new account responds to this need. It will take up government topics of international importance and provide information tailored to the needs of a foreign audience. It is aimed in particular at media professionals abroad and at employees of governments, international and supranational organisations.

The new social media account serves mainly as a channel to reach the target audience. In addition, the Federal Council’s web pages will increasingly feature content for English speakers; the focus is on topical issues and events of international relevance.
