Federal Council appoints SNB Bank Council members

Bern, 22.09.2023 - During its meeting on 22 September 2023, the Federal Council appointed the members of the Bank Council of the Swiss National Bank (SNB) for the term of office from 1 May 2024 to 30 April 2028. It renewed the terms of four serving members and appointed two new members, Andreas Dietrich and Renaud de Planta. Barbara Janom Steiner retains her role as President of the Bank Council.

Andreas Dietrich is Professor for Banking and Finance at the Lucerne University of Applied Sciences and Arts. He studied at the University of St Gallen, obtaining a Doctorate in Banking and Corporate Finance. His research is mainly focused on banking management, especially retail banking, and on new trends in banking, specifically digitalisation. He is also a member of the Board of Directors of Luzerner Kantonalbank.

Renaud de Planta is Senior Partner at the Pictet banking group in Geneva. He studied at the University of St Gallen, where he obtained a Doctorate in Financial Economics, and he has an MBA (Master of Business Administration) from the University of Chicago in the United States. He has been a partner at Pictet since 1998. During that time, he has been responsible for a number of areas, including asset management, which he developed into one of the group's key lines of business.

Terms renewed

In addition, the Federal Council renewed the term of office of Barbara Janom Steiner as President of the Bank Council, a post she has held since 2019, until 30 April 2027, when she will have served the maximum 12-year term.

It also renewed the terms of a further three members:

  • Christian Vitta, Head of the Department of Finance and Economic Affairs of the canton of Ticino;
  • Christoph Ammann, Head of the Department of Economy, Energy and Environment of the canton of Bern;
  • Cornelia Stamm Hurter, Head of the Finance Department of the canton of Schaffhausen.

Subject to his re-election to the Bank Council by the SNB's General Meeting of Shareholders, Romeo Lacher will remain Vice President for the 2024-2028 term of office.

The terms of Shelby du Pasquier and Christoph Lengwiler, who were appointed by the Federal Council, will end on 30 April 2024 as a result of the 12-year limitation on terms of office.

The SNB Bank Council is made up of eleven members, of which six are appointed by the Federal Council and five are elected by the SNB's General Meeting of Shareholders. It oversees and controls the conduct of business by the SNB.
