VPET system takes centre stage in Europe
Bern, 05.09.2023 - The European skills competitions are an important showcase for achievements in vocational and professional education and training (VPET), as well as a platform for cultivating international contacts. Rémy Hübschi, Deputy Director of the State Secretariat for Education, Research and Innovation SERI, will travel to Gdansk, Poland, from 6 to 9 September for EuroSkills 2023. The trip will focus on exchange about various VPET topics with education ministers from other European countries, watching the competitions and attending the reception for the Swiss EuroSkills team.
Rémy Hübschi, Head of the Vocational, Professional and Continuing Education Division at SERI, will travel to Poland for the EuroSkills competition to support the Swiss team. During the trip, he will participate in a vocational training conference on skills for the future as well as a round table with high-ranking representatives of the education ministries of Germany, Austria Luxembourg and Switzerland. The dual system of vocational education and training in these four countries is relatively unknown in some other European countries. The round table will offer an opportunity to demonstrate the Swiss VPET system's high level of permeability and its direct relevance to the world of work, and also to discuss the current challenges facing VPET. Alongside EuroSkills, Mr Hübschi will also hold talks with other education ministers.
"Swiss professionals' participation in international skills competitions like EuroSkills and WorldSkills raises the international profile of our dual VPET system significantly," Mr Hübschi said. "It would be a particular honour if Switzerland would be selected as a first-time host for the 2029 edition of the European skills competition." The SwissSkills foundation board has decided to bid with Geneva to host EuroSkills 2029. The award decision will be announced at the WorldSkills Europe General Assembly in spring 2024.
The Confederation welcomes Switzerland's candidacy to host the 2029 EuroSkills competition. Within the framework of the Vocational and Professional Education and Training Act, SERI has provided CHF 2 to 3 million in annual funding to support SwissSkills, the foundation that works closely with network partners to promote the organisation and further development of skills competitions. The Confederation is thus committed to working with the trade associations and the cantons to provide attractive, future-focused VPET programmes.
