Colombian Truth Commission: Switzerland retains archive copy
Bern, 21.06.2023 - At its meeting on 21 June, the Federal Council approved an agreement to retain a digital backup copy of the archives of the Colombian Truth Commission. Dealing with the past is a key focus area of Switzerland's long-standing peace policy work in Colombia. In safeguarding such sensitive data, Switzerland is supporting the peace process in the long term.
Dealing with the past is an important aspect of Swiss peace policy in Colombia. After the government's peace agreement with the FARC rebels in 2016, Switzerland provided support, among other things, to the work of the Colombian Truth Commission. The Truth Commission completed its mandate in August 2022 and published a final report. It has asked Switzerland to keep a digital backup of its archives, which contain sensitive information on human rights violations as well as testimonies.
The Colombian request is a strong sign of confidence in Switzerland, its peace policy and its pioneering role in the retention of archives.
