Federal Councillor Karin Keller-Sutter meets Vice-President Nadia Calviño in Madrid

Bern, 22.05.2023 - On 22 May 2023, Federal Councillor Karin Keller-Sutter met the First Vice-President of the Spanish Government and Minister for Economic Affairs and Digital Transformation, Nadia Calviño, as well as the Governor of the Bank of Spain, Pablo Hernández de Cos, in Madrid. They discussed current financial and tax issues in the run-up to Spain's presidency of the Council of the European Union.

The visit took place in anticipation of Spain's presidency of the Council of the European Union in the second half of 2023. The aim of the meeting was to exchange views on Spain's priorities and positions. It also provided an opportunity to deepen bilateral economic and financial relations.

Federal Councillor Karin Keller-Sutter and Vice-President Nadia Calviño discussed the war in Ukraine and the associated measures in Switzerland and the EU. In addition, the two ministers exchanged views on the stability of the international financial markets. The EU banking package, the future market access rules for third countries and the implementation of the OECD's planned minimum taxation rules for large multinational enterprises were also addressed.

"Exchanges with our most important partners in Europe on issues of financial market stability and cooperation between financial institutions are valuable for both sides," said Federal Councillor Keller-Sutter. She continued: "Cooperation between Switzerland and Spain functions well, both bilaterally and multilaterally, for example in the International Monetary Fund IMF."

Spain is Switzerland's sixth most important trading partner, with a trade volume of around CHF 20 billion for goods and around CHF 6 billion for services.
