In 2021, 5957 persons in Switzerland died from COVID-19

Neuchâtel, 17.04.2023 - In 2021, 71 192 persons among the Swiss resident population died. The proportion of deaths with COVID-19 as the main cause of death was 8.4%, third only to cardiovascular disease (27.6%) and cancer (23.7%). Two periods of high excess mortality occurred in the two pandemic years 2020 and 2021, largely due to COVID-19 as the cause of death. In a third period at the end of 2021, however, the extent of excess mortality could no longer be fully explained by COVID-19. These are some of the findings of the mortality monitoring and the cause of death statistics 2020 and 2021 from the Federal Statistical Office (FSO).
