In 2021, enterprises invested almost 17 billion in research in Switzerland

Neuchâtel, 19.12.2022 - In 2021, private enterprises in Switzerland spent CHF 16.8 billion on their in-house research and development activities (R&D). This represented an increase of +4% per year since 2019, the year of the last survey. With a total of CHF 6.2 billion, the pharmaceutical sector invested the most in R&D in Switzerland. Almost 62 000 people were involved in R&D activities. A quarter of the workforce was made up of women. These are the main results of a study carried out by the Federal Statistical Office (FSO) in partnership with economiesuisse.
