Reconnaissance technologies: armasuisse is organising an international research event in Interlaken in cooperation with NATO

Bern, 14.10.2022 - More than 130 experts as well as NATO research organisation delegates from 22 countries met in Interlaken between 10 and 14 October. The focus was on a specialist event for satellite observation as well as a panel meeting on modern sensors and electronics technology. The DDPS, represented by armasuisse Science and Technology (S+T), co-organised the event and took part in both the research activities as part of the Partnership for Peace programme (PfP).

Research experts from the NATO subgroup Science and Technology Organization (STO) discussed the topics of space sensors and space situational awareness from 10 to 11 October 2022. Among other topics, they exchanged views on the latest technical findings in the area of satellites, such as how spy satellites can be detected and their flight paths tracked. These findings can be used, for example, to better protect military troops from reconnaissance.

Following this meeting of experts, the 50th Panel Meeting on Modern Sensors and Electronics Technology of the NATO research organisation took place from 12 to 14 October 2022. The delegates, as well as other experts, discussed the latest findings on radar, camera and other technologies for applications with regard to reconnaissance, surveillance and protection. Major progress can be observed in these areas, as a result of digitalisation, artificial intelligence, the expansion of mobile communication and developments in semiconductor technologies.

Switzerland’s participation as part of the Partnership for Peace

Switzerland, represented by armasuisse Science and Technology (S+T) in the DDPS, is taking part in both the NATO research activities as part of the Partnership for Peace programme (PfP). This participation enables armasuisse S+T to gain a better assessment of the technological developments in modern electronics for the Swiss Armed Forces. The local organisation took place under the direction of Thomas Rothacher, Deputy National Armaments Director and Head of S+T.
