Ukraine: Switzerland delivers fire-fighting and rubble removal equipment worth over CHF 5 million

Bern, 07.10.2022 - Switzerland is making a new delivery of material to Ukraine. At the request of the Ukrainian authorities, it will provide equipment to fight fires, clean contaminated water and remove debris and rubble. The Federal Department of Defence, Civil Protection and Sport (DDPS) and the city of Basel donated the equipment, worth CHF 5.2 million in total. The Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (SDC), part of the FDFA, will finance and organise the transport of the goods. The first two lorries left Switzerland today.

Today, Switzerland begins a new round of deliveries of aid to Ukraine. At the request of the Ukrainian embassy in Bern, it will deliver fire-fighting vehicles and equipment. It will also provide construction vehicles to help clear rubble and debris in areas where infrastructure has been destroyed or heavily damaged. The DDPS and the city of Basel donated the equipment, worth CHF 5.2 million in total. The SDC will finance and organise the transport of the goods.

All consignments will be transported by land in a staggered manner. The first two lorries carrying four construction vehicles set off today for Ukraine. In total, Switzerland will deliver 20 construction machines, three fire-fighting vehicles and a smaller vehicle for transporting equipment and personnel, two mobile containers for collecting and cleaning contaminated water, and two containers for emergency response including lifting and moving equipment, lighting and power generators.

The shipments will be handed over to the civil protection service of the Ukrainian Ministry of Internal Affairs after on-site training by specialists from the Swiss Humanitarian Aid Unit. The Ukrainian authorities will then transport this material to Kharkiv, among other places, to carry out reconstruction and repair work in this city in eastern Ukraine, where destruction has been significant.

The necessary clarifications were made in advance with the State Secretariat for Economic Affairs (SECO), which confirmed that the delivery of this material is not subject to any restrictions linked to the Ordinance of 4 March 2022 on measures related to the situation in Ukraine (SR 946.231.176.72).

Since the beginning of the war, the SDC has transported more than 680 tonnes of relief supplies from Switzerland to Ukraine and purchased more than 4,750 tonnes of food aid inside Ukraine to help the population.
