COVID-19 was the third most common cause of death in Switzerland in 2020

Neuchâtel, 29.08.2022 - While there are usually around 70 000 deaths in Switzerland in a normal year, in the 2020 pandemic year there were 76 195 deaths, 12.4% more than in the previous year. This increase was due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The proportion of deaths with COVID-19 as the main cause of death was 12.2% in 2020, third only to cardiovascular disease (26.9%) and cancer (22.2%). These are some of the findings of the cause of death statistics from the Federal Statistical Office (FSO).
