The talks focused on the war in Ukraine and its serious social and economic consequences. The World Bank Group plays a central role in supporting developing countries, which are currently facing several crises. In addition to the impact of the pandemic, major challenges include the looming food crisis, increased debt, the growing fragility in various areas, and climate change.

Mr Parmelin stressed the importance of a strong and effective multilateral system in times of crisis. He expressed great concern over the impact of the war in Ukraine and reaffirmed Switzerland's support for the World Bank Group's rapid response to the challenges. Mr Malpass paid tribute to Switzerland's constructive role in the World Bank Group as a long-standing and active member and expressed his appreciation for the good cooperation.

Switzerland has been a member of the World Bank Group since 1992. Thirty years ago to the day the Swiss electorate voted in favour of Switzerland joining the Bretton Woods Institutions (the World Bank Group and the International Monetary Fund). Switzerland has led a constituency since that time and actively shapes the Institutions' strategic direction and programmes as a member of their governing bodies.
