Over CHF 200 billion for social benefits in 2020

Neuchâtel, 14.02.2022 - CHF 206 billion were paid in social benefits during the year 2020, marked by the COVID-19 pandemic. This was an increase of CHF 20.4 billion compared with 2019 (in real terms + 11.1%). This rise was mainly due to unemployment benefits, including compensation for reduced working hours and for loss of earnings due to coronavirus (+CHF 14.1 billion). Old-age and sickness/healthcare accounted for an additional CHF 2.7 billion and CHF 2.5 billion respectively. These are the latest estimates from the Total Social Security Accounts of the Federal Statistical Office (FSO).
