Stable trend for most common causes of death in 2019

Neuchâtel, 21.12.2021 - In 2019, 67 780 people died in Switzerland, which was 692 or 1% more than in the previous year. As in recent years, the most common causes of death were cardiovascular diseases (29%) and cancer (25%), followed by dementia (10%), respiratory diseases (7%) and external causes such as accidents and violent deaths (6%). The main causes of death vary by age and sex. These are some of the findings from the Cause of death statistics of the Federal Statistical Office (FSO).
