80% more deaths in nursing homes in autumn 2020

Neuchâtel, 13.12.2021 - The COVID-19 pandemic had a major impact on health services in 2020. The number of hospitalisations fell (–5%), as did the number of persons living in nursing homes (–6%). In contrast, the number of deaths rose sharply in hospitals (+8%) and even more so in nursing homes (+16%). Intensive care hours also rose in hospitals. The pandemic also affected finances. The hospitals and nursing homes closed the year with record deficits of 800 and 400 million Swiss francs respectively, according to the Federal Statistical Office (FSO).
