President Guy Parmelin with EFTA in Brussels

Bern, 08.11.2021 - On 9 November, President Guy Parmelin, as head of the Federal Department of Economic Affairs, Education and Research, will attend the annual meeting of the EFTA and the EU ministers of finance and economy (known as the EFTA ECOFIN meeting).

At their annual gathering, EFTA and the EU representatives address current economic policy issues. In addition to Switzerland, EFTA also includes Iceland, Liechtenstein and Norway. The focus this year is on developments since the COVID-19 pandemic and the economic recovery. The EFTA States and the EU have close economic and political links, which provide an opportunity for regular exchange on current challenges and joint solutions.

Mr Parmelin will address the economic situation in Switzerland and outline the country’s economic transition strategy. The Federal Council aims to normalise the situation by supporting recovery with tried and tested instruments, while at the same time strengthening the economy in the long term. Other topics include the importance of international cooperation and open markets, current supply bottlenecks, bilateral relations between Switzerland and the EU, and the need for a sustainable financial policy in order to be prepared for future challenges.
