Sharp drop in life expectancy at birth in Switzerland in 2020

Neuchâtel, 25.10.2021 - In 2020, a year marked by COVID-19, life expectancy at birth fell to 81.0 for men and 85.1 for women, a decline of 0.9 and 0.5 years respectively compared with 2019. Men’s life expectancy at birth was then 81.9 and 85.6 for women. Such a decline had not been observed since 1944 among men and 1962 among women, according to the mortality tables calculated by the Federal Statistical Office (FSO).
