Diplomatic corps travels to Lake Geneva

Bern, 27.08.2021 - On Friday 27 August, President Guy Parmelin hosted members of the diplomatic corps for their traditional excursion. This year’s programme, which took them to Lake Geneva, showcased the long history of Swiss tourism together with its capacity for innovation. The trip included a visit to the Chaplin’s World museum in Corsier-sur-Vevey, which opened in 2016.

The museum is housed on the grounds of Manoir de Ban, home of English comic actor and filmmaker Charlie Chaplin from 1953 until his death in 1977. The tour includes sets and props from Chaplin’s films and also features wax figures of film and historical characters from the time. The current temporary exhibition is dedicated to the 1940 anti-fascist film ‘The Great Dictator’.

An evening reception for the diplomatic corps was held at EHL École hôtelière de Lausanne, ranked the world’s leading institution in hospitality education. In his opening speech, Mr Parmelin paid tribute to the school’s 125-year tradition and stressed the importance of focusing on excellence, particularly at such a time of crisis in the tourism and travel industry. He also called attention to Switzerland's role as a host country: “In offering our good offices, we can contribute to security and prosperity around the globe. There are times when this is done under the world’s gaze, as with the Geneva Summit in June. But very often this work takes place behind the scenes.”

As Dean of the diplomatic corps, Apostolic Nuncio Archbishop Martin Krebs expressed his thanks for the invitation. The event, a fixture in the diplomatic calendar, was attended by foreign ambassadors accredited to Switzerland and resident in Bern. Last year’s excursion was cancelled because of the coronavirus situation.
