Alpine Convention: children and young people on a cycling tour along the River Inn

Bern, 29.07.2021 - The cross-border project «MoVe INN now» kicked off today in Samedan. From 29 July to 12 August, a total of 80 children and young people from the Engadine, Tyrol and Bavaria will cycle along the River Inn. Organised by the Swiss Presidency of the Alpine Convention, the project serves to acquaint participants with the ecological importance of this Alpine river.

More than 40 children and young people will saddle up in Samedan today for a supervised three-day trip along the River Inn. A group from Tyrol will take over in San Niclà in the Lower Engadine, near the border between Switzerland and Austria – a transition they will mark with the symbolic passing of a baton.

The children and young people will also participate in various activities along the way, among them a beaver excursion and a trip to the River Beverin, which has been awarded the Water Pearl PLUS label. A visit to the mill in Ftan is also on the agenda.

The Swiss Presidency of the Alpine Convention aims to use the ride to sensitise children and young people to the importance of alpine ecosystems and climate-friendly mobility. The Pro Terra Engiadina foundation, WWF Austria and the youth and sports organisations of the Lower Engadine all helped to organise the project.

Working together to protect Alpine rivers makes good sense, as the effects of climate change and the loss of biodiversity do not stop at borders. MoVe INN now hopes that the cycling relay will raise awareness of the situation and encourage cooperation among the countries of the River Inn basin – Switzerland, Austria and Germany.

The vice director of the Federal Office for Spatial Development ARE, Ulrich Seewer, will accompany the group for a day: «This project links sustainable mobility – one of our office’s core topics – with environmental education. I’m looking forward to some exciting adventures with the group.»
