Swiss cinemas in the corona year of 2020: half as many cinema screenings and admissions decline by two thirds

Neuchâtel, 23.03.2021 - Major decreases were seen in virtually all areas of the Swiss cinema landscape compared with the previous year: in the case of new film offerings (–43%), in the number of cinema screenings (–49%) and finally in the number of admissions (–65%) and ticket revenue (–65%). The good performance of domestic films in 2020 in relative and absolute figures was nonetheless pleasing for the Swiss film industry. These are some of the definitive results of the Swiss Film and Cinema Statistics 2020 from the Federal Statistical Office (FSO). The Film Festivals, Cinemas and Home Cinema 2014–2019 publication will also be released at the same time which shows how popular the various channels for film viewing are among the different population groups.
