Switzerland is deeply concerned about the seizure of power by the military in Myanmar. Switzerland has actively supported the democratic transition in Myanmar from the beginning and opposes any attempt to alter the outcome of the general elections in November 2020. It calls for the release of President U Win Myint and State Counsellor Aung San Suu Kyi, as well as all persons who have been arrested or placed under house arrest. It also calls for the immediate resumption of dialogue and the democratic process leading to greater freedom, peace, respect for human rights and development in the country.

Since the opening of the country in 2012, Switzerland has been actively engaged in Myanmar with the aim of contributing to a peaceful, inclusive, democratic and prosperous society. To achieve this, Switzerland focuses its measures on the most vulnerable population groups and promotes sustainable development, conflict transformation, human rights, reconciliation and the participation of all people in state-building. Switzerland is committed to an impartial and inclusive approach towards all stakeholders involved.
