FINMA Board of Directors: Federal Council elects Martin Suter as Vice-Chair and Susan Emmenegger as new member

Bern, 28.10.2020 - During its meeting of 28 October 2020, the Federal Council elected Martin Suter as Vice-Chair of FINMA's Board of Directors for the next two years of the 2020–2023 term of office. In this role, he will replace Marlene Amstad, who will take over as Chair of the Board of Directors on 1 January 2021. In addition, Susan Emmenegger was elected as a new member of FINMA's Board of Directors.

On 13 March 2020, the Federal Council elected Marlene Amstad as the new Chair of FINMA's Board of Directors. Today's election by the Federal Council means that Martin Suter will assume her current position as Vice-Chair of the Board of Directors as of 1 January 2021.

Martin Suter has been a member of FINMA's Board of Directors since 1 January 2018 and serves on its Audit and Risk Committee. He holds a master's degree in mathematics from the ETH Zurich with a major in informatics and minors in insurance mathematics, data processing and operations research. At the beginning of his professional career, Martin Suter worked for UBS and Credit Suisse, among others. Between 1999 and 2016 he held various positions at Swiss Life Zurich, most recently as CFO Switzerland and as an member of the Executive Board.

Susan Emmenegger new member of the Board of Directors

At its meeting on 28 October 2020, the Federal Council also elected Susan Emmenegger as a new member of FINMA's Board of Directors. She succeeds Renate Schwob, who is stepping down at the end of December 2020.

After completing her law studies and being admitted to the bar (New York and Zurich), she was an associate professor at the University of Fribourg from 2000 to 2002. In 2005, she moved to the University of Bern, where she is professor for private law and banking law and director of the Institute of Banking Law. Among other things, she has also been a member of the advisory board for the future of the Swiss financial centre and Vice-Chair of the Swiss Takeover Board. Susan Emmenegger was chosen because of her proven long-term experience and her outstanding professional qualifications, especially in the area of banking law.

Composition of the Board of Directors from January 2021

With the election of Marlene Amstad back in spring and today's appointment of Martin Suter and Susan Emmenegger, the Federal Council has now filled the positions on FINMA's Board of Directors that will become vacant on 1 January 2021. Marlene Amstad will replace Thomas Bauer as Chair of the Board of Directors; he will step down from his position on 31 December 2020.

Marlene Amstad has been a member of FINMA's Board of Directors since 1 January 2016 and has held the role of Vice-Chair since 2018. She is a Doctor of economics and will remain a full professor at the Chinese University of Hong Kong, Shenzhen, until the end of the year. Given the growing importance of academic research and international networking, also against the background of increasing digitalisation, she will continue to be active in 2021 as a visiting professor at the University of Bern and as a Senior Fellow at the Harvard Kennedy School in the United States.
