Switzerland ratifies the Final Acts of the World Radiocommunication Conference

Bern, 14.10.2020 - At its meeting on 14 October 2020, the Federal Council ratified the Final Acts of the World Radiocommunication Conference 2019 (WRC-19). In so doing, Switzerland is laying the foundations for continuing to meet the growing demand for frequencies in the information and communication technologies sector, while ensuring the protection of scientific, meteorological and military services.

By approving the decisions of the World Radiocommunication Conference held in Egypt last autumn, the Federal Council is ensuring that Switzerland complies with the international treaty governing the use of the radio frequency spectrum and satellite orbital positions. At the conference, Switzerland succeeded in ensuring that the radio frequencies used by weather radar, radio astronomy services and the military are protected from possible interference from other services.

The Final Acts provide the foundations for a re-evaluation of the National Frequency Allocation Plan (NFAP), an essential instrument for radio frequency resource planning at the national level. The NFAP is managed by the Federal Office of Communications (OFCOM) and is submitted to the Federal Council for approval each autumn.
