Official visit by the President of Lithuania Valdas Adamkus to President Moritz Leuenberger on 7 November in Bern.

Berne, 02.11.2006 - President of the Confederation Moritz Leuenberger will receive Valdas Adamkus, President of the Republic of Lithuania, for an official visit on 7 November in Bern. Federal Councillor Micheline Calmy-Rey will also take part in the talks, which will cover bilateral relations, European integration and a number of current international issues.

Switzerland and Lithuania enjoy excellent relations. Diplomatic relations between the two countries were re-established in 1992. For the record, the Federal Council never recognised the annexation of the three Baltic states by the former Soviet Union. President  Moritz Leuenberger paid an official visit to Vilnius in 2001. The two States have signed an agreement on the protection of investments, and a double taxation agreement entered into force on 1 January 2003. Lithuania has a population of about 3.7 million and has been a  member of the European Union since 1 May 2004.

The volume of trade between the two countries is still relatively modest but is constantly increasing. In 2005, Switzerland exported goods and services worth CHF 106.9 million, while imports totalled 49.3 million.
