Cause of death statistics 2017 - Cardiovascular diseases and cancer continue to be the leading causes of death in Switzerland

Neuchâtel, 16.12.2019 - In 2017, 66 971 people died in Switzerland, 3% more than in the previous year. The most common causes were cardiovascular diseases, which accounted for 31.4% of all deaths and cancer, which accounted for 25.8%. Other common causes of death accounted for less than 10% each of all deaths: dementia 9.8%, respiratory diseases 6.9% and external causes such as accidents, suicide and other rare external influences 5.6%. The ratio between the different causes of death changed little in comparison with the previous year. These are some of the findings from the new Cause of Death Statistics of the Federal Statistical Office (FSO).
