World Radiocommunication Conference: OFCOM to represent Switzerland's interests

Bern, 21.08.2019 - Making new frequencies available to ensure the harmonisation and continued development of wireless communication services: that will be the topic of the next World Radiocommunication Conference (WRC-19) to be held in Sharm el-Sheikh, Egypt, from 28 October to 22 November 2019. On 21 August 2019, the Federal Council commissioned the Federal Office of Communications (OFCOM) with representing Switzerland's interests at the conference. The Swiss delegation will be headed by Philippe Horisberger, Deputy Director of OFCOM.

World Radiocommunication Conferences are held every three to four years. They make it possible to adapt the existing technological framework to new requirements arising from the development of an ever-growing number of wireless applications. The international treaty that is formulated there – known as the "Radio Regulations" – governs the use of satellite orbits and of the radio-frequency spectrum, a finite natural resource that needs to be used rationally, efficiently and economically. The resolutions passed by the WRC are implemented in Switzerland as part of the National Frequency Allocation Plan, which is submitted to the Federal Council each year for its approval.
